Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ women’s basketball falls in top-5 matchup

HENDERSON, Tenn. - 1/14/2012 - The No. 2 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women’s basketball team fell at No. 3 Freed-Hardeman University 66-54. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 16-2 on the season and 3-1 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman improved to 15-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ had no answer for the Lady Lions’ Natalie Shumpert who poured in 32 points, including 20 in the first half. Shumpert scored 20 of her teams 26 first half points as Freed-Hardeman took a 26-22 lead into the locker room. Shumpert was 4-of-5 from 3-point range, all coming in the first half.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held an early 3-point lead in the game, but the home team was able to pull ahead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed by as many as eight points in the first half, before cutting the deficit to just four at the break.

In the second half, Freed-Hardeman started to pull away and with 12:44 left in the game, held a 16-point lead, 44-28. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ began to mount a rally. Over the next nine minutes, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ posted a 21-9 run to pull to with four points. But that was as close as the Lady Bulldogs would get. Freed-Hardeman sank 8-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Mildred Olumasi with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Lavanda Ross added 13 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 40 percent from the field, 20 percent (3-15) from behind the arc, and 58 percent (7-12) from the free throw line.

Freed-Hardeman was led by Shumpert’s 32 points. Hannah Parsley scored 14 points, Ashley Tate added 11 points, while Maria Bagwell pulled down 10 rebounds. The Lady Lions shot 45 percent from the field, 58 percent (7-12) from long range and 77 percent (13-17) from the free throw line.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home game, Monday, January 16 versus Mid-Continent (Ky.) at 6:00 p.m.
