JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/12/2012 - Senior guard David Lane scored a Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ career high of 39 points as the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University men’s basketball team defeated Lyon (Ark.) College 98-71. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 9-7 on the season and 2-1 in the TranSouth. Lyon dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Lane scored 20 points in the first half as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pushed out to a 47-37 lead at the break.
Over the first 12 minutes of play, the game produced 12 lead changes and two ties. Lyon led held the largest lead of four points during that stretch. However, with 8:04 left in the half, Lane sank a basket to put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up for good at 20-19. Lane then added a three pointer as a part of seven straight points from the senior to spark a Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ run. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stretched their first half advantage to as many as 14 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 56 percent from the field, including 55 percent (6-11) from long range in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ maintained control as their lead ballooned to as many as 27 points, including the 98-71 final.
Lane’s game-high 39 points was a season best performance for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Bulldog. Senior Skyler Vaden added a solid 21 points, while eight other Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ players scored in the contest. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 49 percent from the field, 42 percent (10-24) form behind the arc, and 78 percent (14-18) from the free throw line.
Lyon was led by CJ Blount with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Slater Belew added 17 points, Brandon Cowart scored 11 points and Devonte Young added 10 points. The Scots shot 42 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from 3-point range, and 46 percent (15-33) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be another road test versus a ranked opponent. This time No. 18 Freed-Hardeman awaits Saturday at 4:00 p.m. This will mark the third straight road game versus a top-25 opponent.
