Strong second half pushes No. 2 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ past No. 25 Lyon 73-52

JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/12/2012 - The No. 2 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women’s basketball team defeated No. 25 Lyon (Ark.) College 73-52 Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 16-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Lyon dropped to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was their eighth straight victory, and extended their home court winning streak to 32 games.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first on a three pointer from Astrid Huttemann. Lyon answered to take a brief 6-5 lead, but a second three pointer from Huttemann put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up for good. Junior guard Mrashi Karumba scored her 15 of her career high 19 points in the first half as she sparked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to the 32-25 halftime lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as 14 points in the first half.

Freshman guard Amy Philamlee matched her career high in points with 17 on the night, 12 of which came in the second half. Philamlee, Huttemann and Karumba each sank three 3-pointers in the contest.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ extended their second half lead to as many as 23 points late, before taking the 73-52 final.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Karumba’s 19 points on the night. Philamlee was close behind with 17 points, while Lavanda Ross scored 12 points and Huttemann added 11 points. Shelby Ashcraft led with 10 rebounds. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 47 percent from the field, 33 percent (9-27) from long range, and 56 percent (10-18) from the free throw line.

Lyon was led by PHagen Altom with 12 points and Debbie Onukwube with 10 points. The Scots shot 32 percent from the field, 36 percent (5-14) from long range and made all 13 free throw in the contest.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a road game Saturday, January 14 at No. 3 Freed-Hardeman in Henderson, Tenn.
