Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ men come up short in 73-69 loss at No. 8 Martin Methodist

PULASKI, Tenn. - 1/7/2012 - Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University men’s basketball fell in yet another close contest, this time on the road to No. 8 Martin Methodist College 73-69. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 8-7 on the season and 1-1 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist improved to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s seven losses on the season, five have been by five points or less. The other two were by nine points and 11 points.

Martin Methodist jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead and seemed to be in control early. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rallied with a 9-0 run to go up 11-7 with 14:45 left in the half. Martin answered with an 11-0 run to go up by seven points with 11:55 left in the half. Then it was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s turn again. The Bulldogs responded with a 14-0 run to lead 25-18 with 9:15 left in the half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held their lead and went into the locker room leading 40-37.

In the second half, Martin Methodist took the lead and pushed their advantage out to as many as 13 points twice. The latest time was 67-54 with 5:10 left. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ made one final run and with 1:39 left in the game, a three pointer from Antoine Hall had pulled the Bulldogs to within two points, 69-67. Down by two with 17 seconds left, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ had a three pointer partially block with Martin Methodist regaining possession on a jump ball. Ree McCrory scored four of his game-high 28 points in the final minute to help preserve the win for the RedHawks.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Antoine Hall with 17 points, including 11 points in the first half. Leventrice Gray added 12 points, while Anthony Freeman, Jr. pulled down 10 rebounds. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 42 percent from the field, 23 percent (6-26) from long range, and just 45 percent (9-20) from the free throw line.

Martin Methodist was led by McCrory’s 28 points. Reigning TranSouth Player of the Year James Justin recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Laquantis Stewart scored 10 points. Martin Methodist shot 40 percent from the field, 23 percent (6-26) from long range, and 54 percent (7-13) from the free throw line.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home conference game versus Lyon (Ark.) Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
