JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/5/2012 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University men’s basketball team earned an 83-65 victory over Bethel University in the TranSouth Conference opener. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 8-6 on the season, while Bethel dropped to 10-5 overall.
With 10 minutes to play in the contest, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by just two points, 45-43 following a basket by Bethel’s George Coleman. However, over the next eight minutes of play, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ outscored Bethel 32-10 to stretch their lead outs to as many as 24 points to seal the win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 54 percent from the field in the second half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ made just three 3-pointers in the second half, however, two came from senior guard Antoine Hall. His first was early in the run, putting Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up by seven points while is second came to cap off the run and give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ their largest lead of the game.
The final margin of victory would have been 21 points for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ had it not been for a half-court three pointer made by Bethel’s Bryan Ware, Jr. as time expired. It was his third 3-pointer of the night.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by 10 points at the half. However, Bethel came out of the locker room and sank three 3-pointers on their first five possession to cut into Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead. However, the Wildcats never caught the Bulldogs in the second half.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first in the game on a basket from Anthony Freeman, Jr., the first two points of his game-high 18. Bethel followed with a three pointer from Jarvis Palmer to give his team their only lead of the game at 3-2. Hall and Skyler Vaden each sank a three pointer on the next two possession for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as 11 points in the first half, before taking a 36-26 halftime lead.
Freeman’s 18 points led all scorers as he was 7-of-10 from the field. Leventrice Gray added 15 points, Vaden scored 13 points and David Lane added 11 points. Hall made three 3-pointers for his nine points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 47 percent from the field, 29 percent (7-24) from long range and 64 percent (18-28) from the free throw line.
Bethel was led by Palmer with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Caleb Hardy added 13 points, while Coleman scored 10 points. Bethel shot 38 percent from the field, 38 percent (9-24) form the three point line, and 71 percent (12-17) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a tough road conference game Saturday at No. 8 Martin Methodist at 4:00 p.m.
