JACKSON, Miss. - 11/29/2011 - The No. 22 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University men’s basketball team pulled out a 59-58 road victory at Belhaven University Tuesday night. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ evened their record at 5-5, while Belhaven dropped to 2-7 overall.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Skyler Vaden had just six points on the night, but his four points in the final 20 seconds catapulted Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to the victory.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed by three points, 58-55 with 20 seconds left and the ball. Following a timeout, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ immediately got the ball into the lane and scored on a Vaden layup. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then fouled on the inbounds pass to put Belhaven’s Daryl Arnold on the free throw line with 14 seconds left. After a miss on the first attempt, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the rebound and went the length of the floor and scored on another driving layup by Vaden to take the lead. With just four seconds to go, Belhaven turned the ball over as they tried to get a final shot.
The game featured 17 lead changes and nine ties, including nine lead changes and four ties in the second half alone.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as four points in the first half, while Belhaven held their largest first half lead of three points late in the first half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ cut the halftime deficit to 29-27.
In the second half, both teams held a four point lead once. Belhaven held their largest lead of the game, 56-52 with 4:13 left to play. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ outscored Belhaven 7-2 over the final four minutes to pull out the win.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Leventrice Gray with 19 points. Dani Marti had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Antoine Hall scored 11 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 45 percent from the field, 27 percent (4-15) from long range, and 60 percent (9-15) from the free throw line.
Belhaven was led by Woodie Howard with 12 points. Luke Rogers and Britton Smith scored 10 points each. The Blazers shot 38 percent from the field, 38 percent (6-16) from behind the arc, and 60 percent (6-10) from the free throw line.
