No. 2 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ holds off No. 9 Westminster 67-58

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/17/2011 - In the opening game of the 2011 Jackson Rotary Classic, No. 2 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women’s basketball knocked off No. 9 Westminster (Utah) College 67-58. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 5-0 on the season, while Westminster dropped to 3-3 on the season.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead to start the game, but Westminster rallied to tie the game at 8-8 with 14:29 left in the half. Over the remainder of the half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and Westminster swapped leads nine times and had eight more ties. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s largest lead was six points early, while Westminster led by as many as five points, 25-20, at the 7:23 mark. The two teams closed out the half tied for the ninth time of the half at 33-33.

In the second half, Westminster scored five of the first nine points to lead 38-37. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Shelby Ashcraft tied the game with a free throw and then sank a basket on the next possession to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ the lead for good. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ extended their lead to as many as 12 points in the game before taking the 67-58 final.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Lavanda Ross with 15 points. Amy Philamlee added 10 points. Philamlee, Astrid Huttemann and Rebecca Sharpe each added two 3-pointers each. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 51 percent from the field, 40 percent (8-20) from long range, and 64 percent (7-11) from the free throw line.

Westminster was led by Dana Bates with 16 points. Shelby Ellsworth and Jenteal Jackson each added 10 points. The Griffins shot 49 percent from the field, 36 percent (4-11) from behind the arc, and 85 percent (22-26).

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is a game versus The Master’s (Calif.), who is receiving votes, Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Rotary Classic.
