JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/1/2011 - The No. 2 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women’s basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 79-62 win over Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Tuesday. With the win, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ gave head coach Mark Campbell his 400th career victory to just 48 losses.
Campbell, now coaching in his 13th season at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, leads the NAIA’s list of all-time women’s basketball coaches with a .893 winning percentage. Campbell has four NAIA National Titles under his belt and averages 33 wins per season over his career.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ opened the game with a three pointer from Paige Parker. Hannibal-LaGrange (1-2) answered with a long two-pointer from Ashley Wilson to cut the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lead to 3-2. That was as close as Hannibal would get in the contest. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 7-5 before pushing the lead out to their biggest of the half at 17 points, 31-14. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 33-16 at the half.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held the Lady Trojans to just 16 points and 28 percent shooting in the first half.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ slowly pushed their lead out to as many as 22 points, 51-29 at the 13:41 mark. However, Hannibal-LaGrange outscored Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 20-7 over the next eight minutes to cut the deficit down to nine points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered and by the end of the game had pushed the lead back to 17 points, matching their halftime advantage.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Lavanda Ross with a game-high 24 points, while adding 10 rebounds. Her eight assists fell just shy of a triple-double. Freshman Amy Philamlee poured in 15 points, including three 3-pointers on the night. Mrashi Karumba added 12 points and Mildred Olumasi scored 10 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 48 percent from the field, 35 percent ( 6-17) from three point range and 85 percent (17-20) from the free throw line.
Hannibal was led by Ashley Wilson with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ashleigh Spencer scored 15 points and Trenee Thornton added 13 points. Both Spencer and Thornton sank three 3-pointers in the game. The Lady Trojans shot 39 percent from the field, 50 percent (7-14) from behind the arc and 70 percent (7-10) from the charity stripe.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be Homecoming 2011, Saturday, November 5. The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ women face St. Francis (Ill.) at 2 p.m. followed by the men versus Belhaven (Miss.) at 4 p.m.
