JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/7/2011 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University baseball team won four straight games in the 2011 TranSouth Conference Tournament at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Fesmire Field to claim the title. This marked the third TranSouth Tournament Title for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and the second in the past three seasons (2009, 2011). Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was runner-up in 2010.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 38-15 on the season.
Third-seeded Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lost the first game of the tournament to fourth-seed Martin Methodist (Tenn.) 2-1 on opening night of the tournament. However, the Bulldogs rattled off four straight wins, averaging 10 runs in the four games to claim the title. On Thursday, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ topped six-seed Bethel (Tenn.) 10-5 followed by a 8-5 win over top-seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then needed two wins on Saturday to claim the title. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ started the day with a 12-7 win over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) and then an 11-2 win in the title game over Bethel.
In the title game win over Bethel, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Bryan Hill with four hits (4-for-5) while Brett Pawlen was 3-for-4 with a team-high three RBI. Cole McAdams, Kevin Kirksey and RJ Rayborn each added two hits, while Kirksey and Rayborn drove in two runs each. Rayborn hit the game’s only home run for his first of the season. Derek Roof improved to 7-1 on the season with a complete game effort, allowing just two runs with four strikeouts as he scattered nine hits in the game.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ win to start the day had Danny Grimm leading the offensive attack with a 4-for-5 game with four RBI, both team highs. McAdams added three hits and three RBI, while Doug Joyce had two hits and Oscar Depablos drove in two RBI. Justin Bryan and Cody Dew combined to keep the Bulldogs alive in the tournament. Bryan pitched the first 4.2 innings of the game, allowing four runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Dew (2-1) entered the game in the fifth and tossed the final 4.1 innings of work to earn the win. Dew allowed three runs with five strikeouts on two hits.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will await the announcement from the NAIA on May 8 as to the location of their opening round tournament. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ earned the automatic bid from the TranSouth. In 2009, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ played in Daytona Beach, Fla. while getting the Oklahoma City location in 2010.
