No. 13 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ baseball splits with Martin Methodist

JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/8/2011 - The No. 13 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University baseball team rallied to earn a double-header split at home versus Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College. Martin Methodist took the first game 8-5 and then Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rallied to win the second game 6-3. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ goes to 27-10 on the season and 10-4 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, goes to 22-13 overall and 14-3 in league play.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed in the second game following a 3-run third inning from the RedHawks. A walk, a triple from Travis Garcia, and two more hits resulted in the 3-0 deficit. Jackson native Jared Davis settled in as he kept the Martin Methodist squad off the board for his next three innings of work. After not scoring for the first four innings, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finally broke through in the fifth. The first three batters for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ reached on two walks and a bunt single by Danny Grimm. Oscar Depablos followed with a 2-RBI single to left-center to put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ on the board. Doug Joyce then hit a sac-fly to score Grimm to tie the game. Pinch Runner Wacey Russell then scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ their first lead of the day. In the sixth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added two more runs on a 2-RBI double by Depablos. Depablos finished the second game with three hits and four RBI to lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. Davis (7-1) tossed six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Davis had allowed just five walks all season entering this game. Matt Fike tossed a no-hit, one walk top of the seventh to earn his second save of the year.

Martin Methodist starter Jerry McMurtry lost his no-hit bid in the bottom of the fifth when RJ Rayborn led off the inning with a solid single to left. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ already trailed 7-0 at this point after Martin Methodist scored one in the first, four in the second, one in the third and one more in the fifth. Matt Franklin led the RedHawks with a 3-for-4 game with three RBI, including two home runs. Rob Holley also added three hits in the game. Following Rayborn’s hit in the fifth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got three more hits in the inning. After Grimm singled, Joyce and Depablos followed with RBI hits to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ two runs. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored again in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run from Clint Barnes, but could not overcome the early deficit. Jeremey Stack (6-2) tossed two innings, allowing seven five runs on seven hits with one strike out and two walks. Cody Dew tossed the final five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

The two teams will close out the series on Saturday at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in a 12:00 p.m. game.
