No. 7 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ baseball falls in 13 innings at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. - 3/29/2011 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University baseball dropped a 13-inning game 6-5 at Belhaven (Miss.) University on Tuesday. No. 7 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 24-6 on the season. Belhaven, who is the first receiving votes team in the latest rankings at No. 26, improved to 25-10.

This marked the third extra inning game in the past four games for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, including two 13 inning games. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the previous two extra inning games.

Tuesday also marked the release of the latest NAIA baseball rankings in which Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ climbed to No. 7. This is the highest NAIA ranking for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ since the 2002 season when the Bulldogs reached No. 4. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ also reached a No. 4 ranking in 2000. The highest Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ baseball has every been ranked in the NAIA was No. 3 back in 1983 when Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finished third in their only NAIA World Series appearance.

In today’s game, Belhaven scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take the early lead. A third run in the fourth inning put Belhaven up 3-0.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ responded with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take the 5-3 lead. A sacrifice fly from Brett Pawlan and a RBI single from Clint Barnes accounted for the two runs in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Pawlan took care of all three runs with a bases loaded triple.

Belhaven tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning before getting the winning run in the 13th. Lake Eiland led off with a double and was promptly scored when the next hitter, Jimmy Gilford singled.

TranSouth Pitcher of the Week, Derek Roof started the game and lasted 4.1 innings, allowing three runs and six hits with two strikeouts. Cody Dew tossed 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Justin Bryan (0-1) took the loss after tossing a quality 5.2 innings of relief, allowing the one run on five hits with a strikeout. Five Belhaven pitchers toed the rubber, with Josh Clarke (4-1) getting the win by tossing the final 3.2 innings, allowing one hits and no runs with seven strikeouts.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a weekend conference series at No. 17 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday and Saturday.
