Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ softball sweeps Martin Methodist

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/28/2011 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University softball team posted a double-header sweep over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College on Monday at Fesmire Field. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the first game 15-0 and then won the second game 9-1, both in run-rule shortened games.

The first game had Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scoring in the first inning when CJ Browder walked, stole second and scored on two throwing errors. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added four more runs in the second inning. Katie Beth Fesmire, a former USJ standout, hit a two-run homer, while Browder and Stephanie Saunders each added RBI doubles. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ ended the game with 10 runs in the fourth. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ managed just three hits in the fourth inning, but was aided by two RedHawk errors and six walks. Three of the walks came with the bases loaded. Keaton Kirk (8-3) did the work from the circle, allowing just four hits and no runs in the five-inning complete game. She recorded five strikeouts and no walks. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ recorded eight timely hits to take advantage of eight walks and five RedHawk errors in the game. Amber Hayes and Kirk led with two hits each, while Hayes’ four RBI was tops on the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ team.

Game two started with Martin Methodist taking the lead 1-0 in the top of the second inning. However, in the third, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s offense struck for four runs to take the lead for good. The big blow was a two-run home run from Shelby Lamb to cap of the inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added four more in the fourth as Fesmire hit her second home-run of the day to lead off the inning. Hayes added a two run double and Saunders added the other RBI on a single. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ ended the game when Samantha Giesler scored from second on an error by the shortstop in the bottom of the fifth. Brooke Thomas (8-3) earned the win with 4.1 innings of work, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Caroline George entered the game in the fifth with bases loaded and one out. She recorded the final two outs on strikeouts, allowing no runs to score. Hayes led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a 3-for-3 game with two RBI. Browder and Lamb also added two RBI in the second game.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home conference double-header on Friday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. versus Cumberland (Tenn.).
