No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ advances to seventh straight NAIA semifinal

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/19/2011 - The No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team advances in the NAIA DI Women’s Basketball National Championships with a 78-61 win over No. 8 Westminster (Utah) College. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 34-1 on the season, while Westminster, a 2-seed, ends their season at 28-7.

This semifinal appearance for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be the seventh straight for the Lady Bulldogs and 12th in school history.

A night after scoring her career high of 30 points, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ senior Kayla Hudson sank her first six shots, including a 4-for-4 start from behind the arc. Hudson finished with a game-high 27 points, 19 in the first half.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out early with hot shooting. The Lady Bulldogs made 63 percent of their shots in the first half, including 63 percent (5-8) from long range. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pushed out to a 42-24 halftime lead.

After leading by as many as 24 points in the first half, and then 18 points at the break, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ extended their lead out to as many as 25 points in the second half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 53-28 with 16:01 left in the game. The Lady Bulldogs cruised from there to move on to the semifinals on Monday night.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Hudson’s 27 points. Hudson is averaging 23 points per game to this point in the tournament, and her 69 total tournament points leads all players to this point. Sarah Chan added 16 points, while Lavanda Ross scored 10 points. Eight different Lady Bulldogs scored in the game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 47 percent from the field in the game, 47 percent (9-19) from long range and 82 percent (9-11) from the free throw line.

Westminster was led by Nicole Yazzie and Brooke Larsen with 17 points each. The Griffins shot 38 percent from the field, 24 percent from behind the arc and 62 percent (13-21) from the free throw line.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ plays next on Monday at 6:00 p.m. versus Shawnee State (Ohio).
