HATTIESBURG, Miss. - 3/18/2011 - The No. 24 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University softball split a pair of games in the William Carey University Classic on Friday afternoon. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lost 4-0 to No. 12 Belhaven (Miss.) and then defeated Spring Hill (Ala.) 1-0. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s record goes to 14-5 on the season.
In the win over Spring Hill, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored the game's only run in the top of the first inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's leadoff hitter Tobie Joy walked and then scored on a double from Stephanie Saunders. Joy and Brooke Thomas combined to make sure that 1-0 lead held. Joy (2-0) started the game, and allowed just one hit while striking out two. Thomas earned the save with three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.
Belhaven scored a run in the second, two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to win 4-0 in the first game of the day. Thomas (6-2) started the game for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks. Keaton Kirk finished the last 2.1 innings, allowing one run and two hits. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's Joy and Amber Hayes each record one hit each for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ total of two hits in the game.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ plays twice on Saturday in the classic. A rematch against Spring Hill at 12:00 p.m. and then a game against the host No. 3 William Carey at 2:00 p.m. #UNION#
