JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/15/2011 - In a double-header that was moved to Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University’s Fesmire Field because we conditions in Arkansas, the Lady Bulldogs completed a sweep over Lyon (Ark.) College on Tuesday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the first game 11-0 in five innings, before holding on for the 3-2 win in the second game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 13-4 on the season and 7-1 in the TranSouth. Lyon dropped to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will now travel to Lyon on the schedule double-header on April 27 as the home dates have been swapped.
In the second game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out to a three run lead with the help of doubles from Shelby Lamb and Amber Hayes. However, two solo home runs from Lyon’s Kaitlyn Patterson and Erica Whitaker cut the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ deficit to just 3-2 going into the seventh. Lyon got the lead-off hitter on with a walk before she ended up on third on a Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ throwing error. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was able to throw out the runner at the plate on a fielder’s choice to prevent the tying run from scoring and end the threat. Keaton Kirk (5-2) earned the win with 5.2 innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Brooke Thomas earned her second save with 1.1 innings of relief, allowing no runs and no hits with one strike out. Toby Joy, Lamb, and CJ Browder each record two hits in the game, while Katie Davis and Lamb had one RBI each.
In first game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took control with six runs in the second. Two more in the second and three in the fourth set the final at 11-0 in the run-rule shortened game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by seven players with two hits. Every offensive starter had at least one hit in the game. Stephanie Saunders led with three RBI, while Amber Hayes added two RBI. Both Saunders and Hayes each recorded home runs in the game. Thomas (6-1) earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing just two hits with six strikeouts in the shutout effort.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be games in Hattiesburg, Miss. in the William Carey Classic on Friday and Saturday.
