No. 24 Â鶹ÊÓƵ softball sweeps Missouri Baptist

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/26/2011 - The No. 24 Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Tenn.) University softball improved to 6-0 on the season with a double-header sweep over Missouri Baptist University. Â鶹ÊÓƵ took the first game 9-5 and then cruised in the second game 6-0. This was the first two games for Missouri Baptist on the season.

The first game was scoreless through the first two innings. Missouri Baptist put up four runs in the top of the third inning on four hits and one Â鶹ÊÓƵ error. It was a costly error as all four runs were unearned. Â鶹ÊÓƵ answered right back in the bottom of the third with four runs of their own. Â鶹ÊÓƵ pounded out six hits in the frame. A pair of 2-RBI doubles from Stephanie Saunders and Shelby Lamb tied the game for Â鶹ÊÓƵ. Missouri Baptist added another run in the fourth to retake the lead 5-4. But in the bottom of the fourth, Â鶹ÊÓƵ exploded for five runs to take the lead for good. Katie Davis’ two-run homer highlighted the inning. Brooke Thomas (3-0) held Missouri Baptist scoreless for the rest of the game to earn the win. Thomas tossed seven innings, allowing eight hits, five runs, on one earned, while striking out seven. Ali Bozza led Â鶹ÊÓƵ with three hits while Davis, Saunders and Lamb each recorded two RBI.

The second game was all Â鶹ÊÓƵ as Keaton Kirk (3-0) tossed a complete game shutout for her win. Kirk allowed just two hits in the game while striking out seven hitters. Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and two in the sixth. Â鶹ÊÓƵ recorded 10 hits from nine different players. Katie Beth Fesmire had two hits to lead Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a double-header on Wednesday, March 2 at Bethel (Tenn.).
