JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/26/2011 - The No. 24 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University softball improved to 6-0 on the season with a double-header sweep over Missouri Baptist University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the first game 9-5 and then cruised in the second game 6-0. This was the first two games for Missouri Baptist on the season.
The first game was scoreless through the first two innings. Missouri Baptist put up four runs in the top of the third inning on four hits and one Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ error. It was a costly error as all four runs were unearned. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered right back in the bottom of the third with four runs of their own. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pounded out six hits in the frame. A pair of 2-RBI doubles from Stephanie Saunders and Shelby Lamb tied the game for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. Missouri Baptist added another run in the fourth to retake the lead 5-4. But in the bottom of the fourth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ exploded for five runs to take the lead for good. Katie Davis’ two-run homer highlighted the inning. Brooke Thomas (3-0) held Missouri Baptist scoreless for the rest of the game to earn the win. Thomas tossed seven innings, allowing eight hits, five runs, on one earned, while striking out seven. Ali Bozza led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with three hits while Davis, Saunders and Lamb each recorded two RBI.
The second game was all Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ as Keaton Kirk (3-0) tossed a complete game shutout for her win. Kirk allowed just two hits in the game while striking out seven hitters. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and two in the sixth. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ recorded 10 hits from nine different players. Katie Beth Fesmire had two hits to lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a double-header on Wednesday, March 2 at Bethel (Tenn.).
