JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/24/2011 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team earned their fifth straight TranSouth regular season title with a 71-40 win over Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finished the regular season with a 28-1 overall record and a league best 15-1 record. Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 12-14 overall and 9-6 in league play.
Trevecca Nazarene scored first and led 9-6 following a three pointer at the 15:34 mark. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rallied with a 16-0 run to take a 22-9 lead at the 7:20 mark. That 13-point advantage was the largest of the first half as the Trojans pulled to within seven points, 31-24 at the half.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ exploded out of the locker room. Over the first 10 minutes of play, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ outscored Trevecca Nazarene 29-6 to lead 60-30. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as 33 points in the game, before taking the 71-40 final.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Sarah Chan with 27 points and 10 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Lavanda Ross added 13 points. No other Lady Bulldog tallied double figures, but nine of the 10 players scored in the game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 42 percent from the field, 22 percent ( 6-27) from long range and 62 percent ( 13-21) from the free throw line.
Trevecca Nazarene was led by London Elie with nine points and Britt Bell with eight points. The Trojans shot 24 percent from the field, 21 percent (3-14) from behind the arc and 53 percent (9-17) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be the quarterfinal round of the TranSouth Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 2. The game will be played at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, with the opponent to be determined.
