JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/19/2011 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Tenn.) University baseball team improved to 8-0 on the season with a pair of shutouts on Saturday. Â鶹ÊÓƵ opened the day by defeating Huntington (Ind.) University 1-0, then ended the day with a 10-0 victory over Missouri Baptist University.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ and Huntington played a scoreless game until the bottom of the sixth inning. Catcher Doug Joyce singled to start the inning. Bryan Hill’s single moved Wacey Russell, the courtesy runner for Joyce, to third. Kian Jost then singled in Russell for the game’s only run. Â鶹ÊÓƵ starter and former USJ standout Jared Davis (2-0) tossed the complete game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out eight batters. Six different Â鶹ÊÓƵ players recorded one hit each for Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

The second game proved to provide more offense for Â鶹ÊÓƵ, while the pitching remained the same. Senior Kevin Kirksey, who is the Bulldogs’ everyday first baseman, took advantage of the start. Kirksey (1-0) tossed a five-inning complete game shortened by the run-rule. He allowed just one hit in five innings, striking out three batters. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s offense provided plenty of support, scoring twice in the first inning and eight times in the third inning. The first inning included a double-steal for the first run, followed by an RBI single from Oscar Depablos. In the third inning, only one of the eight runs was earned, but the Bulldogs pounded out five hits in the inning. The big blow was a two RBI triple from Bolivar native Clint Barnes. Barnes led Â鶹ÊÓƵ with a 3-for-3 game, including two runs and two RBI. Hill, Depablos and Danny Grimm each added two hits. Depablos recorded two RBI also.

Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a road game at William Carey (Miss.) University on Tuesday, February 22.
