Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ baseball now 6-0 after two more wins

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/18/2011 - The No. 16 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University baseball team improved to 6-0 on the season with two wins on Friday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ needed extra innings to defeat Missouri Baptist University 8-7. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then topped Huntington (Ind.) University 3-1.

In the first game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first with a run in the first inning on a Bryan Hill RBI single, driving in Doug Joyce. The two offenses highlighted the next two innings as both teams recorded two runs each in the second and four runs each in the third. Danny Grimm recorded an RBI single in the second, while RBI hits by Cole McAdams, Brett Pawlen and RJ Rayborn produced the four runs for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in the third. Missouri Baptist (3-3) tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. The score was tied 7-7 as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ came to bat in the bottom of the seven, the last scheduled inning of play. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ threatened, but had the winning run thrown out at home to end the inning. After neither team scored in the eighth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ once again had runners in the bottom of the ninth. With two runners on base, Kevin Kirksey singled on the infield to move the winning run to third. However, a throwing error allowed Oscar Depablos to score the winning run from third. Cody Dew for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ entered the game in the top of the six in relief of Matt Fike and starter Derek Copley. Dew (1-0) tossed the final four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

In the second game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the second. The Bulldogs scored one run in each the second, third and fourth innings to lead 3-1. Starter Jeremey Stack (2-0) made that hold up as he tossed a complete game, five-hitter with six strikeouts. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got one RBI each from Joyce and Pawlen, while four Bulldogs recorded one hit each in the game.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be two more games against the same teams on Saturday, February 19. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ faces Huntington at 11:00 a.m. and then Missouri Baptist at 3:00 p.m. Missouri Baptist and Huntington will play each other at 1:00 p.m.
