No. 24 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ softball opens season with double-header sweep

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/17/2011 - The No. 24 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University women’s softball team opened the 2011 season with a double-header sweep over Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the first game 5-4 and then won the second game 3-2 in eight innings.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (2-0) scored three times in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead in game one. Davis hit an RBI double to right-center, followed by a 2-RBI double by Brittany Burkett to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ the early lead. However, two runs by Christian Brothers in both the second and third innings put the Lady Bucs up 4-3. The two runs in the third were both unearned. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was able to rally in the bottom of the third as Amber Hayes hit a solo home run with one out and then a ground out RBI by Brooke Thomas later in the inning put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ back on top, 5-4. Thomas (1-0) tossed four scoreless innings to finish the complete game. Thomas allowed six hits win the win while striking out nine hitters.

In game two, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shelby Lamb’s two-out RBI scored Topy Joy with who had singled to lead off the inning. The score was 1-1 as the game went to extra innings. In the eighth inning, Christian Brothers scored a run with the international tiebreaker run in effect to take a 2-1 lead. Keaton Kirk reached base on an error that also allowed Sam Giesler to score and tie the game. Joy singled to drive in Kirk for the winning run. Kirk (1-0) also earned the win on the mound as she tossed eight innings, allowing five hits, two runs, one earned on four strikeouts.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a conference double-header at home on Monday, February 21 versus Blue Mountain (Miss.) at 2:00 p.m.
