JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/12/2011 - The No. 16 Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Tenn.) University baseball team opened the 2011 season with a double-header sweep over Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Â鶹ÊÓƵ held on for a 5-4 win in the first game, and then tacked on a 4-1 victory in game two.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game. Â鶹ÊÓƵ starter Derek Copley (1-0) tossed the first five innings, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out six hitters. After scoring an unearned run in the first inning, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s offense produced a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to lead 5-0. However, the bullpen struggled in relief, allowing four runs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Jackson native Jared Davis (1) stopped the seventh inning rally for Oklahoma Wesleyan. Davis entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs. In his one inning, he gave up one hit, allowing an inherited runner to score and recorded one strikeout for the save. Kevin Kirksey recorded a two-RBI double in the fifth. RJ Rayborn, Cole McAdams and Doug Joyce each recorded a pair of hits in the game to spark the Â鶹ÊÓƵ offense.

In the second half, a lead-off home run by Oklahoma Wesleyan’s Cory Ford was the only run and just one of two hits allowed by Â鶹ÊÓƵ starter Jeremey Stack (1-0) of Jackson. Stack tossed five innings, allowing just two hits, one run and struck out six batters. Kirksey (1) tossed the last two innings of perfect relief, striking out three batters for the save. Â鶹ÊÓƵ managed just five hits in the second game by five different players. Danny Grimm and McAdams recorded one RBI each, as the other two runs for Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored on wild pitches.

Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a double-header on Monday at noon versus St. Catharine (Ky.) at Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Fesmire Field.
