No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ drops road game at No. 9 Martin Methodist

PULASKI, Tenn. - 2/5/2011 - The No. 14 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University men’s basketball lost on the road 84-74 to No. 9 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 19-5 on the season and 8-2 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist improved to 21-1 overall and 8-1 in league play.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s seven-game winning streak came to an end, while the loss marked just the second defeat for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ since Nov. 22. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s only two losses this semester have come to Martin Methodist. The Bulldogs dropped out of a tie for first and are now a game back in the league standings.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first when Skyler Vaden sank one of two free throws on their first possession. However, Martin Methodist responded with a 17-2 run as they jumped out to a 17-3 lead at the 14:33 mark of the first half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got as close as seven points in the first half, but the RedHawks controlled the game with a 43-30 halftime lead.

In the earlier meeting at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, the Bulldogs led by 19 in the first half and 11 points at halftime, before Martin Methodist rallied for the win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tried to return the favor on Martin Methodist’s home floor.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ started the second half with a three pointer from Antoine Hall. His shot sparked a 15-4 that helped the Bulldogs pulled to within two points, 47-45, with 14:01 left in the game. But over the next six minutes, the RedHawks pushed their lead back to 15 points, 63-48. Martin Methodist again led by 15 points, 69-54 with 5:45 left in the game when Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ posted one final rally. The Bulldogs closed the gap to four points, 75-71 with 1:59 left. But the RedHawks stopped the rally and sealed the 84-74 victory.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Antoine Joseph and CJ Davis with 20 points each. Davis sank 6-of-11 three pointers. Vaden added 11 points for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. The Bulldogs shot 39 percent from the field, 36 percent ( 10-28) from long range and 71 percent (20-28) from the free throw line.

Martin Methodist was led by Ree McCrory with 17 points. James Justin and LaQuantis Stewart added 16 points. Derrick Davis recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The RedHawks shot 49 percent from the field 36 percent (6-16) from behind the arc and 77 percent ( 10-13) from the free throw line.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home game on Thursday, February 10 versus Lyon (Ark.) at 8:00 p.m.
