Â鶹ÊÓƵ Softball Clinches Fifth Straight Regular Season TranSouth Title

Jackson, Tenn. - 4/15/2003 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University softball team has clinched their fifth consecutive TranSouth Conference regular season title. The Lady Bulldogs improve to 34-8 overall and 14-2 in the conference with just two games to play. Lee University is currently in second with a 7-5 conference record. On Tuesday night, Â鶹ÊÓƵ swept Freed-Hardeman 10-2 and 2-1 to claim the title. Thus far, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s only conference losses have come at home to Trevecca Nazarene and on the road at Martin Methodist.

The Lady Bulldogs are tops in the league in pitching with a team ERA of 0.73, 215 strikeouts, and 17 shutouts. Mary Kosco and Leah Gronberg are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in wins, ERA, Strikeouts, complete games, and shutouts. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s offense is currently third in the conference with a batting average of .297 and they lead with 64 stolen bases.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s freshman outfielder, , is just one stolen base away from Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s single season record of 37. Haycraft, a Dyersburg, Tennessee native has swiped 36 bases in 38 attempts so far this season. She is also third on the team with a .328 batting average and has yet to commit an error in centerfield in 38 chances.

The Bulldogs play for the NCCAA MidEast Region Championship on Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17 at Â鶹ÊÓƵ in a best of three series. The Lady Bulldogs will play Oakland City University in a double-header starting at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. If necessary, game three will be on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., again at Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be looking for their second straight TranSouth Tournament championship in the upcoming conference tournament. The TranSouth Tournament will be hosted by Freed-Hardeman April 30 – May 2.
