JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/8/2011 - The No. 16 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University men’s basketball team fell at home 73-62 to No. 11 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s nine-game winning streak came to an end as the Bulldogs dropped to 12-4 on the season and 1-1 in league play. Martin Methodist stayed perfect on the season with a 13-0 season record, 1-0 in the TranSouth.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ fell to 5-3 at home after leading by as many as 19 points in the first half, including an 11 point halftime lead.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first on a three pointer from Stan McNeil and maintained the lead for the entire first half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 5-4 with 18:01 to play in the first half. Then, the Bulldogs exploded for a 25-6 run thanks to a flurry of three pointers. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lead again by 19 points, 34-15 with 5:57 left in the half.
It was then that Martin Methodist started to chip away. Over the next two-plus minutes, the RedHawks outscored Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 12-2 to get back to within nine points, 36-27. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ quickly jumped back up by 17 points, 44-27 with 1:04 left. But back-to-back three pointers from Ree McCrory and James Justice cut the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lead to 44-33 at the half.
In the second half, things went bad for the Bulldogs as turnovers and cold shooting paralyzed the offense. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ managed just 10 points over the first seven minutes in the second half, but still led 54-44. Martin Methodist then scored the next 19 points to go from 10 down to lead by nine points, 63-54 with 3:37 left. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ went almost 10 minutes with scoring, including a stretch of eight turnovers in 13 possessions.
Martin Methodist led by as many as 13 points, 73-60, before taking the win 73-62.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Antone Joseph with 13 points and 13 rebounds. CJ Davis scored 12 points and Shane Burrell added 13 rebounds. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 40 percent from the field, 38 percent (11-29) from behind the arc and 64 percent ( 7-11) from the free throw line.
Martin Methodist was led by Ree McCrory with a game-high 18 points. Chris Leggett and Chris Godwin added 15 points each, while James Justice added 10 rebounds.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a conference road game at Lyon (Ark.) on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 8:00 p.m.
