Bourbonnais, Ill. - 12/3/2010 - The No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team posted a 71-63 win over No. 6 St. Xavier (Ill.) University in the Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) Classic. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stayed perfect, going 9-0 on the season, while also moving to 5-0 over NAIA top-10 teams. St. Xavier dropped to 6-2 overall.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 9-3 early in the game, but could not hold the lead on the neutral court. St. Xavier pulled ahead and was able to lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ by six at the half, 38-32.
This was the second straight game for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to trail on the road at the half against a top-10 team. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed by five at No. 7 Lee (Tenn.) on Monday before rallying in the second half for the win.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ did the same again on this night. The Lady Bulldogs rallied from six down to eventually lead by as many as 11 points in the second half. After the big Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ run, St. Xavier did not go away as they rallied to cut the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lead down to two points late. But it was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ sinking free throws down the stretch to win by nine, 71-63.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Sarah Chan with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Lavanda Ross scored 21 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 44 percent from the field, 33 percent (4-12) from behind the arc and 68 percent (13-19) from the free throw line.
St. Xavier was led by Michel Tourtillott with 20 points. Shalonda Young added 15 points, while Alex Brown and Marissa Young scored 11 each. St. Xavier shot 35 percent from the field, 32 percent (6-19) from behind the arc and 61 percent (11-18) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a game on Saturday at Olivet Nazarene, who is receiving votes in the NAIA preseason rankings.
