HATTIESBURG, Miss. - 11/20/2010 - The No. 10 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University men’s basketball team fell 85-75 at William Carey (Miss.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (3-2) dropped their second straight game. William Carey, who is receiving votes in the NAIA rankings, improved to 4-1 on the season.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first in the game with two free throws from Roland Banhoro. However, the William Carey Crusaders rattled off 11 straight points to go up 11-2 at the 15:01 mark. William Carey kept a comfortable lead for most of the of the first half, including their largest lead of 12, 25-13, at the 6:28 mark.
But the Bulldogs of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stormed back over the final six minutes of the first half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ outscored William Carey 22-9 to take the 35-34 halftime lead.
In the second half, William Carey scored the first basket on a jumper by Marcus Spann to take the lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ never led again. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ did not score their first points of the second half until Shane Burrell’s basket at the 15:08 mark. That basket snapped an 11-0 run by William Carey to start the half.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got as close as six points early in the second half, but William Carey extended their lead out to as many as 17 points on three different occasions. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed 70-53 with 3:55 left, before cutting the final score down to 85-75.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ out-rebounded William Carey 42-33, including 19-12 on the offensive glass. William Carey forced 16 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ turnovers, while committing just eight themselves.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by CJ Davis and Skylar Vaden with 13 points each. Banhoro added 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Shane Burrell scored 11 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 40 percent from the field, 18 percent (2-11) from behind the arc and 71 percent (27-38) from the free throw line.
William Carey was led by Jonathan Woodland with a game-high 21 points. Drew Meyerchick added 15 points, Keven Branch scored 14 points and Spann contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. The Crusaders shot 49 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the second half. They sank 7-of-16 (44%) three pointers and shot 58 percent (24-41) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home game against No. 17 Campbellsville (Ky.) at 7:00 p.m. This will be the fourth game in a stretch of eight straight against team either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA rankings.
