Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ volleyball takes first conference loss

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/14/2010 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University volleyball team took their first conference loss of the season on Thursday in a 3-1 (19-25, 25-10, 25-15, 25-19) loss to Freed-Hardeman. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 15-5 on the season and 8-1 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman improved to 7-7 overall and 6-3 in league play.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ still holds a two-match lead over three teams in the loss column with five conference matches left.

In the first set, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead. However, following an Freed-Hardeman timeout, the Lady Lions went on a 9-1 run to take an 11-9 lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ quickly regained the lead before the set was tied at 16-16. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then pushed their lead up to 21-17 on their way to the 25-19 win.

The second and third sets were controlled for the entire way by the visitors from Freed-Hardeman. The Lady Lions led 13-3, 20-7 and finally 25-10 in the second set to tie the match. The third set was much the same with Freed-Hardeman jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pulled to within two at 8-6, but got no closer as the Lady Lions pulled away for 25-15 win.

The fourth set started with Freed-Hardeman again jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rallied back to cut their deficit to 10-7. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ kept the set close and pulled to within two points, 18-16, but it was Freed-Hardeman holding on for the 25-19 win.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by the reigning TranSouth Player of the Week Marcela Madeira with 12 kills. Heather Lieberman added 10 kills for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. Emmie Moroski recorded 30 assists, Kelsey Duling led with 26 digs, Shelby Swink, Madeira and Anna Sims led with two blocks.

Freed-Hardeman was led by Sydney Prince with 17 kills. Fernanda Ferreira and Sandra Montoya added 16 and 14 kills respectively. Amber Turner recorded 48 assists, Claire Pennington led with 22 digs and Sandra Montoya led five blocks.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be four matches over the next two days in the Lindenwood (Mo.) Invitational. Among the four opponents, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will face NAIA No. 23 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Oklahoma City who is receiving votes.
