Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ volleyball extends conference lead with 3-0 win

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/12/2010 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) win over Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Pink Night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 15-4 on the season and 8-0 in the TranSouth. Cumberland dropped to 19-8 overall and 6-3 in league play.

The match was between the top two teams in the TranSouth at this point in the season. The win extends Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead to three with six matches left to play.

Cumberland opened the match by scoring the first two points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered with three straight to take a lead they would not surrender for the rest of the set. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 9-8 when a they rolled off nine of the next 11 points to lead 18-10. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held on as Cumberland attempted a rally to win 25-22.

In the second set, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed 6-1 to start the set before head coach Kelley Elliott called a timeout. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ responded with 11 of the next 14 points to lead 12-9. The set stayed close until a quick 4-0 run put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up 19-15. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ extended that lead to a 25-19 win.

The third and final set was close the entire match. Cumberland led 20-19 before another Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ run, this time 6-1 to close the set, sealed the win 25-21.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by the reigning TranSouth Player of the Week, Marcela Madeira, with 21 kills. Heather Lieberman added 11 kills and Anna Sims recorded 10 kills. Emmie Moroski recorded 45 assists, while Kelsey Duling led with 17 digs. Moroski and Sims led with two blocks.

Cumberland was led by Kaysi Arnold with eight kills, Taylor Denney with 17 assists, Jaclyn Rodriguez with 12 digs and Angelyn Stanton with 2.5 blocks.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be another tough home conference match as the Lady Bulldogs face Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) on Thursday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m.
