Â鶹ÊÓƵ men’s soccer shutout streak at five matches

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - 9/11/2010 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Tenn.) University men’s soccer team improved to 5-0 on the season with their fifth consecutive shutout in a 1-0 double overtime win at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. UAH dropped to 0-3 on the season.

Both teams had trouble scoring in the match. Â鶹ÊÓƵ outshot UAH 17-8 overall and 4-2 in shots on goal. However, early in the double-overtime period, Â鶹ÊÓƵ had a scoring opportunity and had the ball in the box. But it was a deflection from a UAH defender that produced the own-goal for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ win.

Rainer House played between the post for Â鶹ÊÓƵ in the first half, recorded no saves. Mike Phelan took over the goalie duties in the second half and over time, recorded two saves helping preserve the shutout.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s best start to a season was 11-0 in 1999. Their current 5-0 start is fourth best in the 13-year history of the program. The five shutouts to start the season is a program record, passing the previous of two straight in 2005. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s record for total shutouts in a season is 10 in 2003.

Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be their first conference match of the season. Â鶹ÊÓƵ plays at Lyon (Ark.) College on Saturday, Sept. 18.
