Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Harken named NAIA baseball scholar athlete

JACKSON, Tenn. - 6/2/2010 - Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University senior pitcher has been named a 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete. Harken is listed among the nation’s top student athletes that are junior, seniors or graduate students with at least a 3.5 GPA.

Harken, a 6-5 right hander from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, helped Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to back-to-back trips to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Rounds. Harken led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a 9-3 record and a 3.31 ERA this season. He tallied 14 appearances, 13 starts, six complete games and one shutout. He tallied 82 strikeouts to just 13 walks in 89.2 innings pitched. In his three years with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, Harken was 24-10 with a .3.32 ERA in 252 innings and 173 strikeouts to just 50 total walks. He was also a key part of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 2009 TranSouth Tournament Championship.

This award is added to his TranSouth first team All-Conference selection and TranSouth Scholar Athlete award.

Harken helped Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to their second straight NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round. The team posted a 42-17 record and finished runner-up in the TranSouth regular season and tournament to only NAIA No. 2 Cumberland (Tenn.). Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finished the season ranked No. 18 in the NAIA. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ reached as high as No. 12 which was the highest national ranking since a No. 8 ranking in 2002. The .712 (42-17) winning percentage this season was the best for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ since a .741 (43-15) winning percentage in 2000.
