PADUCAH, Ky. - 5/13/2010 - In a battle of NAIA Top 20 teams, No. 18 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University defeated No. 2 Cumberland (Tenn.) University 6-1 in the first game of the championship round in the 2010 McDonald's TranSouth Baseball Tournament. Second seed Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ needs one more win over top seed Cumberland to repeat as tournament champions.
Cumberland gave Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ their only loss in the tournament back in the winner's bracket final 14-5.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ junior Kevin Kirksey (2-2) tossed a complete game in the victory for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, holding one the nation's top offensive teams to just one run on six hits. Kirksey, the everyday first baseman for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, also struck out six hitters in the game.
Corey Rudolph led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a 4-for-4 day, while David Maristany led with two RBI. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got solo home runs from Grant Luke and Beau Baker.
Greg Appleton led Cumbelrand with two hits, while Kris Miller accounted for the only run with a solo shot in the fourth inning.
The same two teams will play a winner take all game at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday afternoon for the conference title.
