NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 4/29/2010 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University softball team won a 10 inning game 2-1 over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College in the 2010 TranSouth Softball Conference Tournament. The win puts the second seed Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldogs into the winner’s bracket final against top-seed Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.).
Martin Methodist, ranked No. 23 in the latest NAIA rankings, tied with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ at 10-4 in the league standings. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, who is receiving votes in the NAIA rankings, won the tie-breaker by way of their double-header sweep over Martin Methodist in the regular season.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (34-14) sent freshman all- conference performer Brooke Thomas (21-8) to the circle against Martin Methodist. Thomas, a Huntingdon native, held the RedHawks to just three hits in the 10 innings, including a shutout through nine innings. Thomas struck out 13 hitters in the game and recorded 10 ground outs. Katlin White (22-4) took the loss, allowing two runs and six hits to Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. White was equally impressive as she posted nine shutout innings and struck out 11 hitters.
Martin Methodist broke through with the game’s first run in the top of the 10th inning. With the international tie-breaker run now in effect, the RedHawks moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt. Then an RBI groundout by White scored McWhorter to give Martin Methodist the 1-0 lead. Thomas didn’t allow a hit in the inning as she retired all three hitters on ground outs.
In the bottom of the frame, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ followed suit by sacrificing the runner to third. Amber Hayes, another first team all-conference performer for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, doubled to tie the game. After a wild pitch moved Hayes to third, a single from Jackson native Ali Bozza won the game for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.
Five different players for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tallied a hit with Brittany Burkett the only one with multiple hits at two.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be the winner’s bracket championship on Friday at 1:00 p.m. versus host and NAIA No. 19 Trevecca Nazarene. The two teams met in a double-header at Trevecca Nazarene in the regular season with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ losing both games.
