No. 13 Â鶹ÊÓƵ baseball splits double-header at Bethel

Josh Jones

McKENZIE, Tenn. - 4/23/2010 - The No. 13 Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Tenn.) University baseball team posted a double-header split on Friday at Bethel (Tenn.) University. Â鶹ÊÓƵ lost the first game 4-3 and then took game two 5-1 in eight innings. Â鶹ÊÓƵ moved to 33-12 on the season and 10-4 in the TranSouth. Bethel is now 27-13-1 overall and 5-9 in league play.

Josh Jones was the difference for Â鶹ÊÓƵ in the second game. Jones hit his team-high ninth and tenth home runs in the game, recording all five RBI for Â鶹ÊÓƵ. His solo shot in the second inning gave Â鶹ÊÓƵ the lead. Â鶹ÊÓƵ pitcher Derek Copley made that lead hold up for six innings. However, Copley allowed a lead-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to Jake Ramsey, putting the tying run on base. Jeremy Stack entered the game in relief to try for the save. But Bethel executed a sacrifice bunt to move Ramsey to third, and then scored Ramsey on a squeeze play to tie the game. The game went to extra innings tied at 1-1. After a single, a hit-by-pitch and a walk for Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Jones came to the plate with two outs. His second homer of the game, a grand slam, broke open the 1-1 tie and propelled Â鶹ÊÓƵ to the win. Stack (3-2) struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth innings to get the win. Beau Baker joined Jones with two hits in the contest.

Game one was tied 1-1 going into the fifth inning. Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored twice to take the lead. However, Bethel answered back with three in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. That would be the final score. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Carl Harken (7-2) took the loss, tossing a complete game, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out seven hitters. Â鶹ÊÓƵ managed only three hits, including two from Clint Barnes and one from Jones.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ remained in second place in the TranSouth with a 10-4 record, just two behind lead leader Cumberland (Tenn.) at 12-2.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ and Bethel will play again, weather permitting, at noon on Saturday at Bethel.
