Kirksey’s home run lifts No. 12 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ over Mid-Continent

JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/17/2010 - The No. 12 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University baseball team completed the series sweep over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University with a 4-3 victory on Saturday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ junior Kevin Kirksey hit a game-winning solo shot in the bottom of the ninth to give Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ the win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 32-9 on the season and 9-3 in the TranSouth. Mid-Continent dropped to 8-31 overall and 2-10 in league play.

Kirksey’s sixth home run on the season broke a 3-3 tie and completed Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rally for the win.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 2-0 after single runs in the third and fourth innings. However, Mid-Continent rallied with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, who had scored 23 runs and hit eight home runs in the double-header on Friday, was held at bay on Saturday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tied the game in the eighth inning. Corey Rudolph singled and then stole second base. He scored on a single by Alex Turner to tie the game at 3-3. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ left two runners on base in the eighth.

Jared Davis got the start for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and tossed six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with three strikeouts. Jeremy Stack, who had missed his last two conference starts due to an injury, tossed the final three innings. Stack (2-2) earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out four over this three innings of work.

David Maristany, Josh Jones and Turner led the Bulldogs with two hits. Four different Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ players recorded one RBI each.

Kalip Merrill (1-4) went the distance for Mid-Continent, allowing four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a double-header at (RV) Missouri Baptist on Tuesday, April 20. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then plays a key TranSouth series at (RV) Bethel (Tenn.) on Friday and Saturday, April 23-24.
