PICKWICK DAM, Tenn. - 4/13/2010 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University men’s golf team captured the 2010 TranSouth Conference Golf Tournament Championship. The title gives Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ the automatic bid to the NAIA National Golf Tournament in Silvis, Ill. on May 18-21.
This marks the third TranSouth golf title for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in the past five years (2006, 2008). This is also the fifth first place finish for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in their seven spring golf tournaments.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailed by eight shots after the first round. However, the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Bulldogs took control by winning the second and third rounds to win the 36-hole event.
Milan, Tenn. native and Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ senior golfer, was the only player to finish the event under par. Mallard won the individual title with a three day total of 214 with his best round of 68 coming in the first round. Mallard finished three shots ahead of David Saldana and Joey Bradley, both of Trevecca Nazarene, with scores of 217.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 298 in the first round, 292 in the second round and 289 in the third round for a 36-hole total of 879. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finished five shots ahead of Cumberland (Tenn.) with an 884. Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) finished third with a score of 890, Bethel (Tenn.) was fourth at 929, Martin Methodist (Tenn.) was fifth at 954 and Lyon was sixth at 1,019.
Freshman joined Mallard as the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ representatives on the All-Conference team. Barry shot 221 and finished in fifth place. Ryan Chandler finished in eighth place along with Mills Hamagucchi with scores of 223. Micah Gentle finished in 14th place with a score of 230.
The all-conference team included Clay Mallard (Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ), Joe Bradley (TNU), David Saldana (TNU), Sam Bass (Bethel), Brett Barry (Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ), Dustin Thomas (Cumberland) and Austin Whitmere (Cumberland).
