No. 17 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ baseball gets series sweep at Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. - 4/10/2010 - The No. 17 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University Baseball team posted a double-header sweep at Lyon (Ark.) College on Saturday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the first game 7-1 and then rolled in game two 12-3. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ also defeated Lyon on Friday night 12-7 to sweep the three-game set. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 28-8 on the season and moved into sole possession of second place in the TranSouth with a 6-3 record. Lyon dropped to 21-14 overall and 3-6 in league play.

In the first game of the day, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored quick with a run in the top of the first. Lyon tied the contest at 1-1 with a tally in the third. With the score still tied at 1-1 in the fifth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ closed out the game by scoring in each of the last three innings, including a four-spot in the seventh to pull away. Grant Luke and Corey Rudolph each homered for the Bulldogs. Clint Barnes, Danny Grimm and Beau Baker each joined Rudolph to lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with two hits each. Rudolph’s four RBI was also a team high. Derek Copley (6-1) tossed the complete game, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out three hitters.

In the second game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ freshman and former University School of Jackson standout, Jared Davis tossed six innings for the win. Davis, now 7-0 on the season, got the weekend start in place of fellow Jackson native Jeremey Stack who is still suffering from a injury. In his six innings, Davis allowed three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Cody Dew of Halls, Tenn. tossed a perfect bottom of the seventh. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored four runs in the third and four more in the fourth inning to blow the game open. After Lyon answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tacked on three more runs in the fifth to put the game away. Both teams scored single runs late to set the final at 12-3. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Grimm with three hits and four RBI. Rudolph hit his second home run of the day, and drove in three more runs in the game.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be two non-conference road games against NCAA DII opponents North Alabama and Christian Brothers (Tenn.) on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ returns home for a three-game conference weekend against Mid-Continent (Ky.) on Friday and Saturday.
