Â鶹ÊÓƵ Men’s Tennis is NAIA Preseason No. 8

Jackson, Tenn. - 2/6/2003 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Bulldog tennis program is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA preseason polls. The Bulldogs begin their season on February 22 as they play at Lambuth.

The 2003 tennis season is one of new energy here at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. With all freshmen and sophomore players, Coach Johnson looks to capture the youthful enthusiasm and start building a new core that will sustain the tennis program over the next 3-4 years.

The Bulldogs are coming off a season in which they won their fourth TranSouth conference tennis title and qualified for a fifth consecutive national tournament. The goals for this season will be lofty and Coach Johnson hopes the new guys will rise to the challenge of maintaining the position atop the TranSouth conference.

Many teams in the conference will be stronger this year and the addition of an improved Cumberland University team will make this season one of the most difficult the Bulldogs have faced. The new players will face a challenge in each conference match. Their ability to overcome those difficulties will determine the success of this year’s team.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ enjoyed a championship season last year in which they finished 19-4 overall and 5-0 in the TranSouth Conference. Â鶹ÊÓƵ won the 2002 TranSouth Conference regular season and tournament championship. They finished runner-up in the NAIA Region XI tournament and made the Sweet Sixteen in the NAIA National Tournament in 2002.
