Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ splits double-header with No. 19 Cumberland

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/27/2010 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University baseball team salvaged a win in the weekend series with No. 19 Cumberland (Tenn.) University by way of a double-header split on Saturday. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped the first game 16-5 and then won the second game 7-5. Cumberland took two-of-three games from Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in the TranSouth series with a 2-0 win on Friday night.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is 21-5 overall and 1-2 in the TranSouth, while Cumberland goes to 25-6 on the season and 2-1 in league play.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 1-0 and 4-2 in the first game of the day before Cumberland rallied to lead 5-4 on a three-run homer by Kris Miller. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third after Kevin Kirksey’s RBI double. However, with two outs and nobody on, Cumberland strung together 11 straight hits, including home runs from Troy Frazier and Sam Kikla, to score 11 runs in the frame. Jeremy Stack (1-2) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 10 hits with four strike outs in 3.2 innings of work. Relievers Brad Davis and Colin Hatch allowing five and two runs respectively. Seven different Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ players each recorded one hit each, with Alex Turner leading the way with two RBI. Cumberland pounded out 18 hits in the game, 11 in the fourth inning alone.

Game two was dominated by Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pitcher Derek Copley (5-1) with a complete game effort, allowing five runs on six hits with six strikeouts. All five of the runs allowed came in the final two innings. Over the first five innings, he allowed no runs on just two Cumberland hits. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored in the first with an RBI single by Beau Baker. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added four more runs in the third, the big blow coming on a Josh Jones 3-run home run. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ tacked on insurance with one run in each the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a trip to Jackson, Miss. for games with Tougaloo (Miss.) and Behaven (Miss.) on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 30 and 31.
