JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/19/2010 - Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University cruised to a 70-43 victory over Southern Polytechnic State (Ga.) University in the second round of the 2010 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship. The Lady Bulldogs now advance to the quarterfinals for the seventh straight season and 16th time overall.
Kaitlin Dudley led all scorers with 13 points, and in doing so, moved into second place on Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s all-time scoring list. She passed Charlotte Hart’s 2,339 career points and now sits at 2,343 points. Dudley is just 29 points shy of reaching the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ record.
SPSU led early, 3-2 and 5-4, but Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ quickly took control with a 13-2 run to take a 17-7 lead. The Runnin’ Hornets got as close as seven points before Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pushed it back to double figures. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s halftime lead of 38-19 was their largest of the half.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ continued to build a lead and with 5:02 left in the game, the Lady Bulldogs held their largest lead of 33 points, 67-34.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Dudley’s 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Zeinab Chan and Lavanda Ross each added 12 points. Ashley Lillard grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with her seven points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot over 50 percent in both halves, finishing with at 54 percent for the game, including 31 percent (5-16) from behind the arc.
SPSU was led by Marisa Stotler with nine points. The Runnin’ Hornets shot just 28 percent from the field and 17 percent (3-18) from long range.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (33-2) advances to the quarterfinals to face Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. SPSU ends their season with a 30-5 record.
