JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/3/2010 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Tenn.) University baseball team defeated No. 14 William Carey (Miss.) University 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Â鶹ÊÓƵ, who received votes in the NAIA preseason rankings, improved to 13-2 on the season. William Carey dropped to 10-8 on the season.
As they have all season, Â鶹ÊÓƵ jumped on their opponent early with two first inning runs. Through their first 15 games of the season, Â鶹ÊÓƵ has scored 32 runs in the first inning. Three walks, a hit-by-pitch and a fielder’s choice produced the two runs without the benefit of a hit. Clint Barnes got Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s first hit with a double in the second. He then scored on an error.
Trailing 3-0, William Carey got into the scoring column with two runs in the third. An RBI double from Jacob Casey and a sacrifice fly from Daniel Covert capped off the scoring for the Crusaders.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ responded with three more runs in the third, followed by single runs in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored at least one run in each of the first six innings.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ was led by Alex Turner with a 2-for-4 afternoon. Grant Luke led Â鶹ÊÓƵ with two RBI. Danny Grimm and Corey Rudolph led with two runs scored each. Senior ace Carl Harken (3-0) earned the win with six innings of work, allowing just the two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Jeremy Stack (1) earned the save by tossing the final three innings, allowing no runs and two hits while striking out three batters.
Skylor Burts (0-1) took the loss, pitching only one-third of an inning to start the game. Three William Carey pitchers combined to allow just six Â鶹ÊÓƵ hits, but handed out four walks and seven hit batters.
Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a road double-header on Saturday, March 6 at Ecclesia (Ark.) College at 12:00 noon.
