JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/27/2010 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University softball team posted a double-header sweep on Saturday over No. 25 McKendree (Ill.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the first game 6-0 and then took game two 10-5. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 8-2 on the season while McKendree dropped to 3-3.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ has won five straight games on the season.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ freshman and former Huntingdon High School standout Brooke Thomas took care of most of the work in the first game. Thomas (6-1) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out nine batters. At the plate, Thomas was 1-for-4 including a sixth inning grand slam to put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up 6-0. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored single runs in the second and third innings on an RBI hit from Ali Thomas and a solo home run from Brittany Burkett to take the early 2-0 lead. Thomas and Burkett each led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with two hits in the game.
The second game saw McKendree strike first on a solo home run from Lindsay Newbold in the top of the first. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered by scoring one run in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored in every inning but the first as they exploded for a 10-3 lead going into the seventh. Two runs by McKendree in the top half, set the final at 10-5. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ had five players to record two hits in the game. In addition, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ got home runs from Katie Davis and Amber Hayes for their only hits. Ali Thomas, Hayes and Brooke Thomas each recorded two RBI in the game. Keaton Kirk (2-0) pitched four innings, allowing three runs on six hits for the win. Brooke Thomas pitched 2.2 innings of relief, including the fifth and sixth innings, and the final two outs of the seventh inning. Michelle Piper tossed one-third of an inning, allowing two runs.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home double-header on Tuesday, March 2 at 4:00 p.m. versus Bethel (Tenn.) University. This will not count as a conference series for the two schools, with that important meeting coming on April 13 at Bethel.
