No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finishes perfect conference run with 68-61 win at No. 17 Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 2/25/2010 - The No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University women’s basketball completed their third straight perfect TranSouth regular season with a 68-61 win at No. 17 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ closed out the regular season with a 29-1 overall record and a 16-0 league mark. Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 19-9 overall and 10-5 in the conference.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ now turns attention to the conference tournament were the Lady Bulldogs will be the No. 1 seed after winning their fourth straight TranSouth regular season title.

The win over Trevecca Nazarene extended two streaks for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ including their overall winning streak to 22 games and their TranSouth regular season winning streak to 51 games.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took a quick 5-0 lead on a three pointer from Kaitlin Dudley and a layup from Lavanda Ross. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ never lost that lead, stretching the lead to 12 points, 25-13, at the 8:16 mark. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s biggest lead of the half was 32-19 with 4:47 left in the first half, before taking the 39-27 lead into the break.

In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ seemed to be pulling away as the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead out to 48-33 with 17:02 left to play. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ went almost four minutes without scoring. During that time, Trevecca Nazarene pulled to within seven points, 48-41.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ went back up by 11 points, 54-43 at the 10:31 mark. However, bookend 3-pointers from K.C. Van Atta sparked and capped off a 12-5 Trojan run to pull her team to within four points, 59-55 with 5:52 left.

A 3-point-play by Kayla Hudson on an offensive rebound put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ back up 62-55. After a Trojan basket, the score remained 62-57 for three minutes until Trevecca Nazarene got two free throws to cut the deficit down to just three points, 62-59, with 1:57 left. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held a slim 64-61 lead with 1:10 left in the game. After Trevecca Nazarene missed a possible game-tying three pointer, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Ashley Lillard and Jessica Graves each made 2-of-2 free throws in the final minute to seal the 68-61 win.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Hudson and Ross with 14 points each. Dudley added 13 points and Sara Chan scored 10 points. Hudson scored eight second half points, while Dudley and Chan were held to a combined six points in the final 20 minutes. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot just 34 percent from the field and 26 percent (7-27) from behind the arc, but made 88 percent (15-17) from the free-throw line.

Trevecca Nazarene was led by Van Atta with 15 points, including 11 points and three 3-pointers in the second half. Abby Lawson scored 13 points and Christian Gibson added 11 points. The Trojans shot 37 percent from the field, 30 percent (7-23) from long range and 57 percent (8-14) from the charity stripe.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a TranSouth Tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. With Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ as the No. 1 seed, the Lady Bulldogs will host each of their tournament games.
