Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ baseball goes to 4-0 with pair of Thursday wins

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/18/2010 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University Bulldogs began a long weekend of games on Thursday with wins over Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University and Missouri Baptist (Mo.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took the first game 10-2 over Christian Brothers, and then held off Missouri Baptist 6-5.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (4-0), who is receiving votes in the NAIA preseason rankings, came out strong in the nightcap against Missouri Baptist (0-1) scoring one run in each of the first two innings. In the fifth inning tacked on four more runs that proved to very important runs. The inning started as Corey Rudolph (3-for-4) blasted a triple to deep center field. Josh Jones then laced an RBI on his single to right. Freshman Beau Baker hit his first college career homerun off the scoreboard to put the Bulldogs up 5-0. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ ended the inning with what seemed to be just another run as David Maristany scored on a balk from Missouri Baptist pitcher, Victor Gonzalez. Andrew Haley (2-0) earned the win by pitching five scoreless innings. Kevin Kirksey entered the game in relief in the top of the sixth inning and faced three batters, giving up two runs. Jared Davis came in as the second relief pitcher for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and gave up a three run homer to Adrian Martinez in the seventh inning, cutting Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead to one. The freshman Davis settled down to retire the next three batters on a fly out and two strike outs.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s started the day versus Christian Brothers (0-5) by scoring two runs in the first inning. The Bulldogs added six more runs, including a home run from Josh Jones (3 RBI), over next five innings to take an 8-0 lead going into the seventh. The Buccaneers put together three hits and a walk to score two in the top of the seventh inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was not done as they responded with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to push their lead to 10-2 where it stayed for the rest of the game. Derek Copley (1-0) gained his first win of the season by holding the Buccaneers scoreless through five innings. Brad Davis and Colin Hatch combined for the final four innings of work for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will play four games over the next two days. The Bulldogs will host Missouri Baptist and Indiana University-Southeast in each of the next two day. Missouri Baptist an Indiana-Southest will also meet each other at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ twice over the next two days. Games start at 11:00 a.m. both days.
