PULASKI, Tenn. - 1/9/2010 - The No. 19 ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University Bulldogs held off a late rally by the Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College RedHawks to win 67-60. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist, who is receiving votes in the latest rankings, dropped to 11-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 53-41 with just over 10 minutes remaining, but Martin Methodist had one final run left to try and avoid a home loss. Over the next five minutes, the RedHawks cut Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead down to 55-53 thanks to a 15-3 run. Martin Methodist pulled to within two points two more times, 59-57 and 61-59, but Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was able to keep the lead.
A field goal from Marques Washington with 1:13 left pulled the RedHawks to within two 61-59. With the score still at 61-59 and 33 seconds left, Martin Methodist missed two free throws that would have tied the game. Instead it was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Greg Truvillion and Keith Tolliver who combined for six-of-six shooting from the free throw line in the final 27 seconds to seal the win, 67-60.
Martin Methodist jumped out to a 4-2 lead and again 6-5 before Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took control early. From that point, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ posted a 9-0 run to go up 14-6 with 11:21 left in the half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ continued to push and after holding an 18-13 lead with 8:04 left, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ outscored Martin Methodist 15-2 over the next six minutes to take their biggest lead of 18 points, 33-15. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held a 35-21 lead at the half.
In the second half, the home RedHawks opened with an 8-2 run to cut the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lead down to eight points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ continued to hold off the Martin Methodist rallies as the Bulldogs extended their lead back to 14 points, 52-38, with 14:12 left.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Truvillion with 24 points including nine-of-11 shooting from the field and four-of-four from the free throw line. Tolliver and Roland Banhoro each added 13 points for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. The Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the field, 27 percent (4-15) from behind the arc and 64 percent (9-14) from the free throw line.
Martin Methodist was led by Washington with 16 points. Jason Simon added 13 points and Aubre Bodison scored 10 points. Will Shackleford pulled down 21 rebounds in the loss. The RedHawks shot 37 percent from the field, 33 percent (7-21) from behind the arc and 47 percent ( 7-15) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home game on Thursday, January 14 at 8:00 p.m. versus Lyon (Ark.) College.
