JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/4/2010 - The No. 19 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (Tenn.) University Bulldogs fell at home 73-66 to the Crusaders of William Carey (Miss.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 9-5 on the season, while William Carey improved to 9-1.
This is the second meeting of the year for these two teams with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ taking the first game in Hattiesburg, Miss. 76-72. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ remains the only team to defeat William Carey this season.
William Carey scored first with a three pointer from Chris Cyprian, but it was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answering with a 10-0 run to lead 10-3. William Carey slowly crept back and another three pointer with seven minutes to play in the half, put the Crusaders back on top, 21-20. The Bulldogs quickly regained the lead and held on for a slim 37-35 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ opened with a three pointer from Keith Tolliver to push their lead to five points. However, the visiting Crusaders stormed back with a 13-2 run to take a six point, 48-42 lead with 15:33 left in the game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stayed close and actually took one-point leads on two occasions, but again found themselves trailing by five, 61-56 with 7:49 left.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then mustarded the energy for one final run that saw the Bulldogs outscore William Carey 10-0 over the next two minutes. Five straight points from Antoine Joseph including a dunk followed by a three pointer put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up 66-61 with 5:57 left to play. However, five Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ turnovers and two misses on the front end of one-and-ones down the stretch sealed their fate. William Carey closed out the final 5:57 of play by outscoring Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 12-0 to take the 73-66 road win.
Despite outshooting the Crusaders from the field, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ committed 23 turnovers to just 14 from William Carey. The Crusaders scored 29 points off turnovers and put up 18 more shots in the game.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Stan McNeil with 18 points including four three pointers. Greg Truvillion added 14 points, Tolliver scored 12 points and Roland Banhoro grabbed 13 rebounds. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 44 percent from the field, 40 percent (10-25) from behind the arc and 78 percent (14-18) from the free throw line.
William Carey was led by Brandon Cooks with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Cyprian added 13 points. The Crusaders shot 36 percent from the field, 37 percent (7-19) from behind the arc and 86 percent (18-21) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be the TranSouth Conference season opener as the Bulldog host Bethel (Tenn.) on Thursday, January 7. The men’s game will begin at 8:00 p.m. with the women’s game set to start at 6:00 p.m. Both Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ men and women will begin defending their conference titles from 2009.
