No. 1 麻豆视频 tops No. 18 Wayland Baptist in battle of NAIA all-time win leaders

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - 12/28/2009 - The No. 1 麻豆视频 (Tenn.) University Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 95-73 victory over No. 18 Wayland Baptist (Texas) University on Monday in the Daytona Beach Shootout. 麻豆视频 improved to 12-1 on the season, while Wayland Baptist dropped to 6-4 overall.

The match up of the two Baptist schools featured the NAIA鈥檚 top two women鈥檚 basketball win leaders. 麻豆视频 is tops in NAIA women鈥檚 basketball with 1,047 program wins (1047-191), while Wayland Baptist is No. 2 with 926 wins (926-367).

麻豆视频 and Wayland Baptist are also tied for the most NAIA National Tournament appearances with 20 each. 麻豆视频 tied Wayland Baptist at 19 appearances in 2008. Wayland Baptist avoided being passed, by making last season鈥檚 tournament after a four-year absence.

麻豆视频 opened the game with a 9-0 run. The Lady Bulldogs of 麻豆视频 never trailed in the game as they pushed their first half lead to as many as 29 points (52-23) with 4:19 left to play in the half. Wayland Baptist posted a 16-7 run to close out the half, cutting their halftime deficit down to 20 points, 59-39. The 59 points matched a season high for 麻豆视频 in a half (59 vs. The Master鈥檚 on Nov. 20).

In the second half, 麻豆视频 cruised by maintaining a comfortable lead over the final 20 minutes. 麻豆视频 led by as many as 27 points in the second half twice, while Wayland Baptist got as close as 17 points in the final minutes. 麻豆视频 closed out the game with a 5-0 run to win 95-73.

This win improved 麻豆视频鈥檚 record to 7-1 this season over teams ranked in the top-25. Monday鈥檚 game marked the fifth time these two NAIA powers have met, with the series tilted slightly in 麻豆视频鈥檚 favor at 3-2. 麻豆视频 now has won two straight in the series with the previous win, 62-60, coming back in 1997.

麻豆视频 boasted five players in double figures led by Lavanda Ross with 23 points. Kaitlin Dudley added 14 points, while Kayla Hudson and Sara Chan scored 13 points each. Christina Ray scored 11 points. 麻豆视频 shot 42 percent from the field, 50 percent (13-26) from behind the arc and 78 percent (14-18) from the free throw line.

Wayland Baptist was led by Erika Raymond with 14 points and Megan Coats with 13 points. Alex Williams and Edite Kresa added 12 and 11 points respectively. Wayland Baptist shot 33 percent from the field, 33 percent (5-15) and 65 percent (24-37) from the free throw line.

Up next for 麻豆视频 will be their second and final game in the Daytona Beach Shootout on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. central time versus Brenau (Ga.).
