No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ has 31-game winning streak snapped in 94-87 loss to No. 7 St. Xavier

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/27/2009 - The top ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldog basketball team tasted defeat for the first time in almost a year as No. 7 St. Xavier (Ill.) University defeated Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 94-87 in the Lambuth (Tenn.) Thanksgiving Classic. The loss snapped a 31-game winning streak dating back to December 13, 2008 at Lee (Tenn.). Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ dropped to 7-1 on the season, while St. Xavier improved to 7-0 overall.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s streak of 26 straight No. 1 rankings, spanning three seasons, is also in jeopardy as the next NAIA poll will be released on December 7.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ struggled to make shots in the first half, shooting just 35 percent from the field and 25 percent (1-4) from behind the arc.

On the other side, St. Xavier sank 63 percent of their first half shots, including two-of-three from behind the arc. St. Xavier held a 53-30 halftime lead.

In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stormed back, outscoring St. Xavier 57-41 in the final 20 minutes, but the hole was just too deep for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to climb out. St. Xavier, led by Kathlyn McClain with 27 points, topped Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 94-87.

St. Xaiver’s McClain sank four-of-five three points on her way to the game-high 27 points. The Cougars shot 58 percent from the field in the game, 60 percent (6-10) from behind the arc and 76 percent (22-29) from the free throw line.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field, 44 percent (12-27) from behind the arc and 81 percent (21-26) from the free throw line.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Kayla Hudson with 25 points, including seven-of-11 three pointers. Jessica Graves added 17 points, Kaitlin Dudley scored 14 points and Lavanda Ross added 11 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s second leading scorer, Sara Chan, scored just one point in the game.

In addition to McClain’s 27 points, St. Xaiver got double figure performances from Erin Hanneman with 22 points, Shalonda Young with 13 points and Alex Barone with 12 points.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a 1:00 p.m. start in the Lambuth Classic versus No. 21 Loyola (La.).
