JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/19/2009 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women’s basketball team opened the 2009 Jackson Rotary Classic with a 93-68 win over Westminster (Utah) College. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, improved to 5-0 on the season. Westminster’s overall record fell to 3-3.
Westminster scored the first point of the game when Dani Evans made one-of-two free throws. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rattled off 14 straight points over the next five minutes to lead 14-1. The Lady Bulldogs continued on a 27-9 run over the first 10 minutes of play. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stretched their halftime lead to 52-31.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s big first half was sparked by 71 percent shooting from the field, including 44 percent (4-9) from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes of play.
Sara Chan of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ poured in 16 first half points.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ extended their lead to as many at 31 points, 87-56, at the 4:37 mark. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ cruised to the 93-68 final.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ finished the game shooting 62 percent from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from behind the arc and 88 percent (7-8) from the free throw line.
Chan finished with a game-high 22 points for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. Kaitlin Dudley added 16 points, Lavanda Ross scored 15 points and Kayla Hudson posted 11 points. Hudson sank three-of-six three pointers. Kayla Bryant for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added two-of-four shooting from behind the arc.
Westminster was led by McKenzie Jessop with 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Nicole Yazzie and Allie Eastman scored 12 and 10 points respectively. Westminster shot 50 percent from the field, 33 percent (6-18) from behind the arc and 86 percent (12-14) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be versus The Master’s (Calif.) College on Friday at 7:00 p.m. during the Rotary Classic.
