JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/17/2009 - The No. 11 Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Bulldog dropped their second straight home game in a 57-50 loss to Campbellsville (Ky.) University. Â鶹ÊÓƵ, who is coming off a 66-64 win at No. 5 McKendree, dropped to 3-2 on the season. Campbellsville, who is receiving votes in the NAIA preseason rankings, improved to 4-1 overall.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ defense has been a strong force for the Bulldogs through five games, giving up only 60 points per game and not allowing a team to score 70 in any game to this point. The 57 points allowed is the fourth lowest total for Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s defense in the past four seasons.
However, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s offense in their two losses has struggled, especially from behind the arc. In the three wins, Â鶹ÊÓƵ is shooting 41 percent (24-59) from behind the arc, while shooting just 16 percent (8-50) in their two losses. The 50 points scored in this game by Â鶹ÊÓƵ tonight is the lowest point total for a Â鶹ÊÓƵ men’s team since the 1988-89 season when Â鶹ÊÓƵ lost 71-46 to Mobile (Ala.).
Â鶹ÊÓƵ jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the contest and led 30-22 at the half, but could not hold the lead.
After Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s 10-0 run to start the game, Campbellsville answered with a 20-10 run to tie the game at 20-20 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Â鶹ÊÓƵ closed the half with a 10-2 run to lead 30-22 at the break.
Campbellsville opened the second half by scoring six straight points and 13 of the half’s first 17 points to take their first lead of the game at 35-34. Jordan Benock’s three pointer at the 16:13 mark gave his Tigers the lead they would not give up. Campbellsville scored the next five points to push their lead to six, 40-34, making their run to start the half 18-4. The Tigers led by as many as six points on three occasions in the final 10 minutes of play, before two late free throws pushed the final score to 57-50.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ pulled to within one point, 49-48 with just over two minutes left on a three pointer from Stan McNeil. However, Campbellsville sank six-of-six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ was led by last week’s TranSouth Player of the Week Greg Truvillion with is third straight double-double, going for 18 points and 20 rebounds. No other Â鶹ÊÓƵ player notched double figures. Â鶹ÊÓƵ shot just 35 percent from the field, 19 percent (5-26) from behind the arc and a low 42 percent (5-12) from the free throw line.
The Tigers were led by Caleb Harris and Nestor Colmenares with 15 points each. Campbellsville shot 36 percent from the field, 33 percent (4-12) from behind the arc, and 72 percent (13-18) from the free throw line.
Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be two road games. First Â鶹ÊÓƵ travels to Hattiesburg, Miss. on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game with William Carey University. Â鶹ÊÓƵ then plays Belhaven (Miss.) College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
