Jackson Local Earns NCCAA Region MVP for Â鶹ÊÓƵ

Jackson, Tenn. - 11/20/2002 - Christopher Anthony, a soccer standout from Jackson-Central Merry High School, was named as the NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament MVP. Anthony’s goal with 14 seconds remaining in the championship game sent Â鶹ÊÓƵ into overtime where the Bulldogs came away with a 2-1 victory over Asbury College. With the win, Â鶹ÊÓƵ qualifies for the NCCAA National Tournament

Anthony, a 5-foot-7 freshman, had earned a starting role in pre-season practice this year and had started every game until shoulder injury sidelined him for three weeks. In only his third day back from the injured list, Anthony kept alive what looked to be the last game of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s season. Â鶹ÊÓƵ trailed 1-0 with only seconds to go in the NCCAA MidEast Region Championship game. Senior forward, Kekec Zivkovic set up Anthony for the goal that tied the game. Â鶹ÊÓƵ then scored only minutes into the overtime on a goal by Clovis Simas to give the Bulldogs the title and a spot in this weekend’s NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ opens play in the national tournament on Friday, November 22 at 2:00 p.m. ET as they battle Roberts Wesleyan College out of New York. The Bulldogs are the No. 7 seed in the tournament with an overall record of 12-8-1.

Three other Â鶹ÊÓƵ Bulldogs have received honors from the NCCAA. Joe Phiri, Clovis Simas, and Dickson native Robert Stinson were all named to the NCCAA MidEast Region team. Phiri, a senior forward, leads the Bulldogs in goals with 15 and points with 37. Simas, a sophomore midfielder, has nine goals and nine assists and has played in all 21 games for the Bulldogs. As a former Dickson County standout and freshman goalie for the Bulldogs, Stinson has 58 saves in 1054 minutes as goalie. His 1.37 GAA and 16 games in the net lead the team.
